MARRIAGE LICENSES & CEREMONIES

Pre-apply for a Marriage License. See Fees & Costs for the current filing fee and accepted payments. The Recording Department stops issuing marriage licenses at 4:30 p.m.

Couples wishing to get married in Florida may apply for a license at the Clerk’s Recording Department in downtown Fort Pierce office. The license is valid in any Florida county for a period of 60 days. Once issued, Florida residents must wait three days to get married. No appointment is necessary to apply for a marriage license or to have the ceremony performed by a staff member of Clerk’s Office.

Instructions

To obtain a marriage license both parties may appear in person at the Clerk’s office with:

  • Driver license issued in the United States;
  • Federal or state identification card, such as a Social Security card; or
  • Passport showing your name and date of birth (birth certificates or green cards are not accepted)

To expedite the process, you may pre-apply online prior to coming to the office in person. You will receive a transaction number to bring to the Clerk’s Recording Department. Pre-applying online begins the request process and does not constitute an issuance of a marriage license.

If there has been a divorce within the last six months, a certified copy of the final divorce decree is required. If it has been longer than six months, only the exact date is needed.

Both parties must read the Family Law Handbook and sign an affidavit stating that the handbook was read. The handbook is also available in Spanish.

Requirements for Minors 16 to 17 years old (one or both applicants)
All of the following are required:

  • One of the forms of identification listed above;
  • Minor's birth certificate showing parent's name; and
  • A parental consent form may be obtained at the time of the application. Both parents must be present with their own identification on hand. The exception will be if the parents are divorced and one parent has full custody of the minor. In this case, proof of custody must be presented and only the consent of the custodial parent will be required in writing.

Requirements for Minors Under 16 (one or both applicants)
All of the following are required:

  • All the requirements listed above for 16 to 17-year-olds;
  • Under oath, swear that they are the parents or expected parents of a child;
  • Provide proof in the form of the child’s birth certificate or written statement from a licensed physician verifying pregnancy; and
  • May require judicial review.

A previously married minor may apply without the need for parental consent.

Waiting Period & Discounted License

There is a three-day waiting period before you may use your license to get married. This waiting period can be waived if both applicants attend counseling with an approved Marital Course Provider. There is no waiting period for non-Florida residents.

Couples who attend counseling, whether or not Florida residents, can bring in their certificate of completion and receive a $32.50 discount on the cost of their license.

Marriage Ceremonies

The office performs ceremonies Monday through Friday at the Clerk’s downtown Fort Pierce office. The ceremonies cost $30 in addition to the license fee.

Copies & Certified Copies of Marriage Licenses

To obtain a free copy of a marriage license recorded in St. Lucie County, search the Official Records. Certified copies may be obtained from the Clerk's Research Department. If your license was obtained in another county or state, you must search the records in that county or state.
